Most people have at least heard of the power of massage therapy and the importance of fitting this form of self-care into your health routine. What many people don’t know is that massage therapy is also a powerful and effective tool that can be incorporated into your weight loss routine to help you enhance your results.
When applied, massage therapy techniques not only improve your body’s resilience by promoting muscle health and flexibility but also by improving your mental and emotional well-being. Often, we find that our clients who are incorporating regular massage therapy sessions are often the ones who feel motivated enough to see their fitness goals through.
Many of our clients come to us looking to eliminate a few extra inches from their belly area. Massage on its own doesn’t necessarily give you long-term weight loss results, but it helps as it’s a type of massage to lose inches around your stomach.
Abdominal massage techniques can be used to help a bloated abdomen become a bit flatter by shifting impacted waste and fermented gas that can cause bloating and discomfort. By working on your small and large intestines through an abdominal massage, your massage therapist can help your body flush out these toxic byproducts.
Lymphatic massage techniques were first used in the 1930s to help improve drainage and reduce water retention. Water retention is typically caused by excessive amounts of sugar and salt in our diets which make it such a useful technique for almost all of our clients.
Whether you know it or not, sugar and salt are two of your biggest enemies when it comes to establishing and maintaining a health fitness or weight loss regime, and they are everywhere. You may have heard a health-conscious friend complain about the hidden sugars they find in some of their favorite foods, and there’s a reason for it. These excess levels of sugars (many of which are hidden) mean that your lymphatic system can become blocked or sluggish, making it difficult for your body to eliminate waste and causing it to hold onto it instead.
Lymphatic massage is directed at your lymph nodes and uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to help your lymph nodes rid your body of waste. Although your muscles aren’t necessarily the focus for this kind of massage, a lymphatic massage can reshape your body by helping you eliminate waste and water weight.
During a deep tissue massage, the high pressure, mechanical motions of your massage therapist creates a heat-producing friction that helps enhance your body’s natural ability to break down fatty deposits for easier elimination, particularly in cellulite-prone areas. One study conducted in the United Kingdom found that deep tissue massages helped 85 women with different body shapes to lose at least a centimeter from their waist areas when massage was used in conjunction with healthy eating and exercise habits.
In addition to helping your body flush out toxins, regular massage has also been found to help improve your circulatory system and enhance your body’s ability to recover from injuries. If you have been injured or cannot continue your normal workout regime because of muscle pain, a massage can help your body recover and burn calories at the same time.
If you’re experiencing muscle pain or discomfort from a sports injury, we also recommend consulting with our chiropractic physicians to ensure that you have the tools you need to help with your long-term health and recovery.
